How to prepare album cover art for a music visualizer

Understand the crop before adding effects

A 3000 × 3000 cover is square. A 1080 × 1920 video is 9:16. Filling the vertical frame with the square image trims the left and right sides; fitting the whole image preserves it but leaves space above and below. Neither arrangement is automatically wrong: the important question is what content the crop removes.

If both performers sit at opposite edges of the cover, a centre crop can remove their faces. If the release title reaches across the artwork, its first and last letters may disappear. Prepare a portrait version in your image editor when the square original cannot survive the crop. YOLO's audio-reactive image movement does not create missing artwork outside the image.

Use enough detail for the intended output

Keep the original high-resolution image and make working copies. For a full-frame 1080 × 1920 composition, aim for artwork at least that large in its final orientation. Enlarging a small image cannot recover detail, and further zooming leaves fewer source pixels for the visible area.

Exporting the video in 4K does not repair a low-resolution background. Inspect lettering, thin lines and faces at the intended output size. A crisp image with a restrained spectrum often reads better than a larger file containing blurred artwork.

Decide where the title and spectrum belong

1. Choose whether the song title is part of the image or added in the visualizer. Avoid repeating it in two competing places.
2. Keep important faces and logos away from the outer edges, where a crop or platform interface may cover them.
3. Place the spectrum in an area with enough contrast. Leave it separate from the main lettering when possible.
4. Match one bright accent and one supporting colour to the artwork, then check the quiet and loud parts of the track.

Check movement, not just the opening image

Reactive motion can change what is visible after the first frame. Review a sample with strong beats and watch the edges of the artwork. If a face or title approaches the border, lower the image movement or allow more room in the composition.
